Sandro del Prete
Perspective
This artist encountered enormous difficulties creating a realistic sense of depth in
his paintings in spite of his best efforts. One day, he decided to add a frame to the
canvas, and painted it so that it appeared to be placed in the foreground, in front
of the canvas. He pulled at the right angle of the frame and placed it in front of
the canvas in such a way that he could no longer remove himself without the risk
of creating a hole in the composition. A victim of his own imagination, he remains
confined between the frame and the canvas, where he can still be seen today.
