Sandro del Prete
Romeo and Juliet
In the corner of the room, two small illustrations face each other: in one a lovely
young girl, while in the other, a handsome young manfacing her. They fall deeply in
love. It is widely believed that love moves mountains, and in that spirit, they move
closer and closer together until their frames merge. Unfortunately, the subjects never
manage to blend like their frames do, as they are prisoniers of a two-dimensional
world. Only their fingers touch, not in the foreground, where one believes that one
can see their hands join, but in the corner, behind the scene. In reality, the
illustrations are placed side by side, each on the opposing surface of the corner. This
picture demonstrates how our feelings and imagination oppose spacial logic.
